Cytochrome P450 Enzyme Inducers- Easy Mnemonic

Cytochrom P450 enzymes are very essential enzymes required for the metabolism of the various medications and drugs. These enzymes can be induced or inhibited by the various drug and compounds we consume. This induction or inhibition can cause unanticipated therapeutic adverse reactions and therapeutic failures.

 Enzyme inducers are the compounds which induce the cytochrome P450 enzymes. They can be drugs or any other chemicals ( eg. food, herbs). Induction of enzyme by a compound can cause the therapeutic failure.

 The list of enzyme inducers is rigorous. It is impossible to remember all of them. But we can remember high yield enzyme inducers with the help of the following mnemonic.

 The mnemonic is: BullShit CRAP GPS iNduces my rage !
Where,
B = Barbiturates
S = St. John's Wort
C = Carbamazepine
R = Rifampin
A = Alcohol (chronic use)
P = Phenytoin
G = Griseofulvin, Ginseng
P = Phenobarbitol
S = Sulfonylureas
N = Nevirapine

I hope this mnemonic will help you remember high yield enzyme inducers. Also check our YouTube video to learn more about enzyme inducers:

DNA Viruses - Easy Mnemonics & High Yield Points

DNA viruses are the viruses with DNA as genome. There are many medically important DNA viruses. DNA viruses cause many diseases and it is really essential for a medical student to learn about them.
Medically important DNA virus families are listed below:
1. Parvoviruses
2. Papillomaviruses
3. Polyomaviruses
4. Adenoviruses
5. Herpesviruses
6. Hepadnaviruses
7. Poxviruses

To remember these viruses we can use the Mnemonic: Pardon PaPa As He Has Pox DNA.
Where,
Pardon: Parvoviruses
Pa: Papillomaviruses
Pa: Polyomaviruses
As: Adenoviruses
He: Herpesviruses
Has: Hepadnaviruses
Pox: Poxviruses
DNA: DNA virus family.

Genereal rule for DNA viruses:
1. Most of the DNA viruses are double stranded, except Parvovirus.
2. All the DNA viruses have linear genome except Papillpmaviruses, Polymomaviruses and Hepadnaviruses (@ PaPaHD).
3. All DNA viruses replicate in the nucleus except poxviruses.
4. All the DNA viruses are icosahedral except poxviruses which have complex capsid.
